Their goal is the same but the way to achieve it is very different. We explain it to you.
In recent years, the use of toe separators has gained popularity in Spain, but toe spacers remain a little-known tool, even though they are the most used in other parts of the world. To better understand their differences, we must first know what they share.
To better understand their differences, we must first know what they share
Common Goal: Alignment and functionality of the foot.
Both separators and toe spacers aim to align the toes with their respective metatarsal bones, thus ensuring proper foot function. In short, both devices force the intrinsic muscles of the foot to work in a way that restores the feet and toes to their natural shape and function.
From this common goal, there are significant differences between the two, which allows them to be combined for the best results.
Toe Separators
Their use is better known in Spain.
- Goal: Restore and return the natural shape, strength, and function of the feet through their use in more active activities.
- Material: SBES, elastic, flexible, soft material.
- Use: During physical activities, while moving.
- Focus: Ideal for dynamic sports activities such as training, walking, yoga, or any activity involving dynamic movement that requires more support.
- Interdigital separation: Greater separation between the toes.
- Transition: adaptation to these devices must be much more gradual than for spacers.
- Drawbacks: Prolonged use (more than 1 or 2 hours straight) can compromise blood circulation or cause discomfort.
Toe Spacers
Much more widely used in other parts of the world, but less known in Spain.
- Goal: Maintain and ensure the natural space of the toes for longer periods, working passively on their alignment.
- Material: Medical-grade silicone, firmer and more consistent.
- Use: Can be used for longer periods (they do not compromise toe circulation because they are not as elastic)
- Focus: Can be used in less active activities or at rest. They can be worn under regular socks to counteract the compression these cause or with five-toe socks. They can also be used at rest (although the benefits in this case are much less than using them in movement, even if light). It makes sense, for example, to wear them during your workday, on a long trip, when shopping, watching a series, or reading a book.
- Interdigital separation: Less interdigital separation.
- Transition/use time: Since the space they create between the toes is very natural, the adaptation period will be shorter. As they do not compromise toe circulation, they can be worn for hours without any problem.
- Drawbacks: Because they fit over the toes and do not hold elastically, they can come off during very dynamic activities.
As you can see, one complements the other, and it is advisable to use both to improve the health of your feet. Here is a summary of everything mentioned above:

Regardless of which suits your needs better, both have clear benefits for the health of your feet.
Benefits of using toe separators and spacers
- Improved alignment: Both devices help correct toe alignment, reducing the risk of deformities such as bunions and claw toes.
- Injury prevention: By strengthening the intrinsic muscles of the foot, they lower the chances of injuries during physical activity.
- Improved circulation: They promote proper blood flow in the feet, reducing swelling and improving vascular health.
- Pain relief: By correcting foot posture and alignment, they can relieve pain caused by prolonged use of unsuitable footwear or deformities.
Practical advice for introduction and use
- Start slowly: Begin using them for short periods and gradually increase the time as your feet adapt.
- Combine with exercises: Complement their use with specific exercises to strengthen foot muscles, such as stretches and toe mobility exercises.
- Proper footwear: Use minimalist or wide enough footwear so as not to interfere with toe alignment when using these devices.
- Hygiene and care: Clean the separators and spacers regularly to avoid bacteria buildup and make sure to dry them well before using them again.
